#20 men's tennis knocks off Occidental 8-1

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The #20 Brandeis men's tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory over Occidental College last night in the next-to-last match of their annual February trip to California. The Judges improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 1-3 on the season.

The Judges opened with a doubles sweep, needing two tiebreakers to take the 3-0 lead. After top team David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and Anupreeth Coramutla (Monroe Township, N.J. / Phillips Andover) cruised to an 8-2 win, junior Zach Cihlar (Phoenix, Ariz. / Brophy College Prep.) and senior Eric Goldberg (Solon, Ohio/Solon) took the first tiebreaker at No. 3, 9-8 (7-5). At No. 2, the rookie tandem of Nikhil Das (Smithfield, R.I. / Moses Brown School) and Rajan Vohra (Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) outlasted Oxy's Isa Kibira and Lucas Chmielewski in the final game, 14-12, to close out the sweep.

Moving to singles action, Aizenberg did not lose a game at No. 2, with a 6-0, 6-0, victory. Junior Ethan Saal (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Abraham Joshua Heschel School) picked up a win in his first match of the spring season with a 6-2, 6-1, win at No. 5. Senior Billy Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif. / The Buckley School) clinched the win in front of a hometown crowd with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6.

Occidental got on the board at No. 1 with a three-set win, as Chmielewski earned a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 win, taking the third set in a super-tiebreaker. At No. 4, sophomore Ben Wolfe (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) also went to a third set super-tiebreaker, emerging with a 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-5 win. Junior Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) closed out the match at No. 3 with two tight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

The Judges close out their February break trip to the West Coast with a match against #12-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
