Men's tennis tops DI Bryant, 5-2, in first match as a top 10 squad

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team, playing its first match as a top-10 team this season, went on the road and defeated Division I Bryant University, 5-2, today. The Judges improve to 4-1 with the win, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-7.

The match was played under Division I rules, including doubles matches played to 6, with all three combining to count for one point, and no-ad scoring in games.

The Judges' doubles play was strong, allowing them to pick up the first point of the match with a sweep. Senior Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y. / Great Neck South) and rookie Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc. / James Madison Memorial) picked up the first win at #2, 6-2, while sophomores Nikhil Das (Smithfield, R.I. / Moses Brown School) and Rajan Vohra (Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) clinched the point at #3 with an 6-3 win. The #1 squad of junior David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and sophomore Anupreeth Coramutla (Monroe Township, N.J./Phillips Andover) completed the sweep, 6-4.

In singles action, the top doubles duo rolled to the first two points, dropping just five games between them. Coramutla got on the board first at #2, 6-1, 6-1, while Aizenberg followed suit, 6-1, 6-2, to make the score 3-0.

Bryant won the first set at #3 and #4, but the Judges bounced back to take the second in each. The Bulldogs captured #3, where Andrew Pregel bounced back to defeat Das, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Brandeis secured victory with a comeback at #4, where rookie Jeffrey Chen (Northfield, Ill. / New Trier) defeated Andrew Forchetti, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Ng earned a 6-4, 6-1, win at #6 to close out the Judges' scoring, while Vohra lost a third-set super tiebreaker at #4 in the final match of the day.

The Judges are back in action tomorrow at Bates College, ranked #23 in Division III, at 2 p.m.
