#9 men get past #19 Colby, 6-3

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team saw its top two players go 3-0 today as the Judges, ranked 9th nationally in Division III, defeated 19th-ranked Colby College, 6-3, indoor at the Gosman Athletic Center. With the win, the Judges improve to 6-2, while the Mules fall to 0-2.

Brandeis opened by taking two out of three doubles matches. Seniors Jeffrey Chen (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and Adam Tzeng (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) opened with an 8-3 victory at the top spot. Colby answered with an 8-2 win at #3, but Brandeis took the lead into singles thanks to a come-back win at #2 by first-year Colin Fox (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and sophomore Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School). The Judge duo trailed, 5-3, but came back to win, 8-7, taking the tiebreaker by a 7-3 margin.

In singles action, Tzeng and Chen continued their excellent play. Tzeng rolled to a 6-1, 6-2, victory, at the top spot, while Chen earned a 7-5, 6-4, victory at #2. Colby's Jake Cohen got the Mules on the board again with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Fox at #3 to make the score, 4-2, Brandeis, headed into the final flight of singles.

At the bottom of the lineup, Colby's Max Schuermann knocked off Walters, 7-5, 6-4, to draw Colby within 4-3, but junior Simon Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette H.S.) defeated Sam Henry, 6-0, 6-3, at #6 to clinch the match. Senior Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc./Madison Memorial) rounded out the scoring with a 6-2, 6-2, win at #5.

The Judges return to action next Friday, March 18, at 1 p.m. against #16-ranked Denison University.
