Brandeis tennis sweeps UAA weekly honors, April 11

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University tennis team swept this week's University Athletic Association Player of the Week awards. Junior Simon Kauppila of Chesterfield, Missouri, was honored for the men, while first-year Bhakti Parwani of Ahmedabad, India, was recognized for the women.

Kauppila was honored for the first time in his career. He went 3-0 for the #14 Judges last week, including a pair of match-clinching wins over ranked opponents. In a 7-2 win over #32 MIT, he clinched the team's win with a 6-4, 6-2, victory at #5 singles. In a 5-4 win over #26 Babson, Kauppila played doubles for just the second time this dual-meet season, earning an 8-6 win at #2 with Jeffrey Chen. In singles action, with the match tied at 4-4, he earned a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0, comeback in his first match of the season at #4 singles. His .857 winning percentage (6-1) in dual matches leads the team.

The 10-3 Judges return to action on Saturday afternoon at #27 Wesleyan (Conn.) University.

Parwani was honored for the second time this season. She went 4-0 at #1 singles and doubles for the Judges in a 1-1 week, with both matches decided by 5-4 scores. In a 5-4 loss to Skidmore, she won 8-4 with Sabrina Loui in doubles, then won 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in singles. In a 5-4 win over Division II Franklin Pierce, she earned wins of 8-5 and 6-0, 6-3. Overall this season, Parwani owns a 7-4 record, second-best on the team.

Parwani and the 4-10 Judges return to action at #5 Wesleyan on Saturday.

Kauppila is a 2019 graduate of Marquette High School.

Parwani is a 2021 graduate of Kumkum School.
