#27 men take first loss of season, 7-2, at #5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The #27 Brandeis University men's tennis team took its first loss of the season on Sunday night, opening their February break trip to California with a 7-2 loss at the hands of #5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 2-1, #27 in Division III.
  • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps: 4-0, #5 in Division III.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brandeis got on the board first at #2 doubles. Seniors Hunter Levine (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) and Simon Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) knocked off Ian Freer ad Advik Mareedu, 8-4.
  • The Stags knotted things up at #3 when Christopher Li and Nathan Arimilli topped Brandeis first-year Alex Merson (Palisades Park, N.J. / Tenafly) and sophomore Aryan Nijhawan (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Westborough).
  • The Judges had a chance to take the lead into singles action when first-year Tommy Harrison (London, England / National Extension College) and junior Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) came from 4-6 down to reach a tiebreaker against Christian Settles and Matthew Robinson, the #6 team in the ITA Division III doubles rankings, but the Stag duo prevailed, 8-7 (8-6).
  • C-M-S rolled in singles action, winning the first five singles matches in straight sets. Kauppila tested #38 Robinson, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at #3.
  • Brandeis took their singles point at #6, where junior Chen Liang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai Pinghe School) earned a 7-5, 3-6, 10-0 win in a third-set super tiebreaker.
