Men's tennis downs Trinity (Conn.), 7-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team won for the fourth time in five tries today, defeating visiting Trinity (Connecticut), 7-2, at the Cordish Tennis Center.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 8-5, ranked #31 in Division III by Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
  • Trinity (Conn.): 4-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • All three doubles matches were decided by 8-3 scores. Trinity opened the match with a win at #1, but seniors Simon Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo. / Marquette H.S.) and Hunter Levine (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) evened things up at #2.
  • Sophomore Chen Liang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai Pinghe School) and first-year Alex Merson (Palisades Park, N.J. / Tenafly) gave the Judges a 2-1 lead at #3.
  • Liang and Merson continued their success with the first two singles wins at #4 and #5, each by 6-0, 6-2, scores.
  • Kauppila clinched the win at #3 singles with a 6-3, 6-2, victory.
  • Trinity picked up their second point with a win at #1 before first-year Tommy Harrison (London, England / National Extension College) won 7-5, 6-1, at #2, while junior Aaron Bayse (Mission Viejo, Calif. / Tesoro) rounded things out with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #6.
