#28 men's tennis to play for fifth in UAA after 5-0 win over Rochester

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team did not drop more than four games in their five completed matches today as the fifth-seeded Judges defeated eighth-seeded Rochester in the consolation semifinals of the 2023 University Athletic Association Tournament. With the win, the Judges will meet sixth-seeded Carnegie Mellon tomorrow in the UAA Fifth-Place match.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 12-7, ranked #28 in Division III.
  • Rochester: 7-10

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges swept doubles from the Yellowjackets for the second time in the two meetings between the teams.
  • First-year Tommy Harrison (London, England / National Extension College) and junior Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./The Gilman School) opened with a quick 8-0 win at #1.
  • First-year Alex Merson (Palisades Park, N.J. / Tenafly) and sophomore Chen Liang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai Pinghe School) were 8-3 winners at #3.
  • Seniors Hunter Levine (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) and Simon Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo. / Marquette H.S.) completed the sweep, 8-4, at #2.
  • Liang picked up the team's fourth point at #4 singles, 6-2, 6-0, with his second win of the day over UR's Rahul Ravi.
  • Kauppila rounded out the victory at #2 with a 6-2, 6-2, triumph.

UP NEXT

  • The #28 Judges will take on sixth-seeded and 24th-ranked Carnegie Mellon tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. in the UAA fifth-place match.
