Holgate qualifies for NCAAs in mile run at BU

BOSTON, Mass. -- Competing in a field of Division I, II and III competitors at the 2011 Boston University Terrier Classic, the Brandeis men's track and field team had its first NCAA provisional qualifying performance of the season.

Senior Devon Holgate (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) finished in 25th place overall and sixth among Division III competitors in the mile run, but his time of 4:14.57 was just under the provisional qualifying time. Holgate qualified for the NCAA indoor track championships last year but was not high enough on the ranking list to be selected for competition. He is currently ranked third in the UAA in the mile.

Rookie Vincent Asante (Bronx, N.Y./HS for Arts, Imagination and Inquiry) continued his fine season in the sprints. Asante was the only Division III runner to qualify for the finals in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.14 seconds, finishing second in his heat and 12th overall in the prelims. In the finals, Asante ran 7.27 seconds to finish 15th. Asante also won his heat in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.74 seconds, third among D3 runners.

Senior Paul Norton (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) and sophomore Alex Kramer (No. Andover, Mass./Andover) were the top two Division III runners in the 3,000-meter run, placing 23rd and 24th with times of 8:31.81 and 8:32.17, respectively.
