NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Two Brandeis runners won titles today and two others were runners-up at the 2012 University Athletic Association championships hosted by NYU at the Armory. Both Judges teams finished in seventh place.
Seniors Chris Brown (No. Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and Kate Warwick (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough), ranked top in the UAA and among the top five in Division III entering the meet in the mile run and 5,000-meters, respectively, each claimed their first conference titles. Brown took the mile with a time of 4:15.38, nearly three seconds faster than NYU's Matt Turlip. Warwick, who competed in the 3,000-meter run, an event not contested at the NCAA championships, edged Washington University's Lucy Cheadle by three-tenths of a second with a time of 9:57.86. Both runners earned their first individual All-UAA honor in indoor track and field and second of 2011-12 to go with one from cross country season.
Brandeis had two other All-Association performances, both on the men's side. Sophomore Vincent Asante (Bronx, N.Y./H.S. for Arts, Imagination and Inquiry) just missed his third career UAA sprint title. The 2011 champion in the 55-meters indoors and the 100-meters outdoors, Asante came in second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.09 seconds in the finals, 0.09 behind NYU rookie Jonathan Simon. Junior Alex Kramer (No. Andover, Mass./No. Andover) just missed giving the Judges a sweep of 3,000-meter champions as he was edged out at the wire. With a time of 8:32.56, Kramer claimed his second All-UAA honor in the event after a third-place finish in 2010.
The Judges just missed a pair of All-UAA honors in the high jump. Senior Lily Parenteau (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) finished fourth for the women with a height of 1.60 meters (5 feet, 3 inches), two inches out of a top-three placement. Rookie Jeffrey Maser (Livingston, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) tied for fourth on the men's side with a height of 1.90 meters (6 feet, 2 3/4 inches), also missing by two inches.
Brandeis's next action will also take place at the Armory, when they compete at the ECAC championships next weekend, the last chance for individuals to qualify for the NCAA championships.
