O'Neil, Farquhar set PRs as Judges compete at BU and Tufts

BOSTON and MEDFORD, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's track and field team split their squad on Sunday, January 30, with a few Judges competing at the Boston University Terrier Classic and the rest at the Tufts University Branwen Smith-King Invitational.

At BU, the Judges had two person-best performances. In the 60-meter dash, senior Reese Farquhar (Newton, Mass. / Newton North) shaved a full tenth of a second from his previous PR with a time of 7.18 seconds. Farquhar finished second in the non-Invitational 60m, running the same time in both the prelims and the finals. Senior Jamie O'Neil (Auburndale, Mass. / Newton North) took 0.09 off his PR in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.57 seconds. O'Neil finished 47th overall, fourth among D3 runners. Both runners also set personal-best times in the 200-meter dash. Farquhar placed 44th overall and won his heat with a time of 22.69 seconds, lowering his previous best by more than six-tenths of a second. He was sixth among D3 runners.  O'Neil placed 70th with a time of 23.36 seconds, 0.42 better than his previous career best.  Sophomore Samuel Kim (La Jolla, Calif. / Phillips Exeter, N.H.) ran the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.85 seconds, 90th place, 14th among D3 runners.

At Tufts, the Judges finished with 28 points to finish in eighth place among 10 scoring squads. They scored their most points in the 200-meter dash, with three runners among the scoring positions. Sophomore Parker Jones (Westbury, N.Y. / Packer Collegiate Institute) was fourth in 24.05, a collegiate best. Rookie Dean Carey (New York, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) was sixth in 24.03, while junior Dean Campbell (Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. / Manchester-Essex Regional) was seventh in 23.80 seconds. Carey also placed fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.36, his time in both the prelims and the finals, a career-best. In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Young Wang (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) was seventh with a time of 55.76 seconds.

In field events, the Judges had another event with three scorers, the triple jump. First-year Lin Lin Hutchinson (Portland, Ore. / Ida B. Wells) set one of two career-bests on the day with a leap of 11.71 meters (38-5), good for sixth place. Hutchinson also placed seventh in the long jump with a distance of 5.54 meters (19-0 ½). In the triple, Jones took seventh place with a distance of 11.52 meters (37-9 ½) and sophomore Ori Slotky (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) was eighth at 11.47 meters (37-7 ¾). Junior Thomas Vandalovsky (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) rounded out the individual scorers with a distance of 13.53 meters (44-4 ¾) in the 35-pound weight throw.

Brandeis also scored in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Campbell, Wang, and first-years Simon Goode (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) and Carl Nie (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) placed fourth with a time of 3:40.91.

The Judges return to action on Saturday, February 5, at the Tufts Cupid Invitational.
