Track teams return to Tufts for second-straight week

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Brandeis University track and field teams returned to Tuft for the second week in a row for the 2022 Cupid Challenge. The Judges had 13 top-10 finishes in the non-scoring event.

The top single event for the Judges came from the women in the 60-meter hurdles, where sophomore Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) placed 4th and senior Sonali Anderson (Fayetteville, Ga. / Whitewater) took 5th. Campbell ran a season-best 9.48 seconds in the prelims, also fourth-fastest, and ran 9.57 seconds in the finals. Anderson took the seventh spot in prelims with a time of 9.90 seconds and ran fifth in the finals with a time of 9.57.

The top individual finisher for Brandeis was senior Natalie Hattan (Sugar Land, Texas / Clements) in the mile run. She ran 5:15.24, about two seconds out of second place but three seconds ahead of fourth in a spread-out finish. First-year teammate Kayla DiBenedetto (Andover, Mass. / Andover) was 10th in the event with a time of 5:31.91. She was about two seconds off of a p.r.

On the men's side, senior Reese Farquhar (Newton, Mass. / Newton North) was the top finisher, placing sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.17 seconds, about 0.13 out of fifth place. Classmate Jamie O'Neil (Auburndale, Mass. / Newton North) was ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.66 seconds, just nine-hundredths out of eighth.

Back with the women, junior Victoria Morrongiello (Staten Island, N.Y. / Susan E. Wagner) placed sixth in the 800-meter dash, running 2:24.06, about a quarter of a second out of seventh place.

The Judges had a pair of 10th-place finishes among runners, with senior Jacob Grant (Rockville Center, N.Y. / South Side) taking 10th in the 600-meters with a season-best time of 1:25.58. He was 1.5 seconds faster than his previous best of the campaign and about 0.25 seconds out of seventh place. Sophomore Juliette Intrieri (North Salem, N.Y. / North Salem) took 10th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:45.89, just 0.89 out of a PR and six seconds out of ninth place.

Two field performers finished in the top 10 as well. Junior Thomas Vandalovsky (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) was sixth in the shotput with a throw of 13.66 meters, a season-best by 0.16. Sophomore Smiley Huynh (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx H.S. of Science) matched her season-best in the pole vault with a height of 3.10 meters, good for seventh place.

The two 4x400-meter relays placed in the top 10. The men's squad of Grant, senior Aaron Portman (Wheeling, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson), sophomore Samuel Kim (La Jolla, Calif. / Phillips Exeter (N.H.)) and O'Neil placed fourth in 3:31.41. For the women, the team of sophomore Liz Korn (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont), Morrogiello, Campbell and senior Devin Hiltunen (Quincy, Mass. / North Quincy) were seventh in 4:18.11.

Brandeis track and field returns to action with a pair of meets next weekend, the BU Valentine's Invitational and MIT's Gordon Kelly Invitational.
