Magill claims Open New England title in 5K

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Erin Magill (Moretown, Vt./Harwood Union) continued her fantastic season with a win in the 5,000-meter run at the 2022 Open New England Championships at Bryant University. Magill's 10 points helped the women's track and field team finish in a tie for 28th place; the men's team did not score any points at the meet.

Magill's win came on Friday evening at Bryant. She posted a personal-best time of 16:52.26 to finish ahead of competitors from Division I Quinnipiac and Holy Cross by 11 and 22 seconds, respectively. Her time is currently ranked 14th in Division III, which should be enough to qualify Magill for her third NCAA Championship of the 2021-22 school year.

Also on Friday evening, sophomore Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) and senior Sonali Anderson (Fayetteville, Ga./Whitewater) competed in the 100-meter hurdles for the women. Campbell finished in 26th place wit a time of 15.36, while Anderson was 28th in 15.63. They were eighth and 10th among D3 competitors. Junior Yahni Lapa (West Newton, Mass./Newton North) was 21st in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.73, good for ninth among D3 runners and just one-hundredth of a second off her personal best, run a week earlier. Senior Devin Hiltunen (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) placed 23rd in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.55 seconds, eighth in D3.

On the men's side on Day One of the meet, sophomore Ori Slotky (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) set a p.r. in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.60, taking a second-and-a-half off his previous career-best. He placed 25th, ninth among D3 runners.

On the second day of action, there were two individuals and four relays in action. Individually, senior Natalie Hattan (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) took 21st place in the 1,500-meter run, posting a time of 4:54.84. She was fourth among D3 runners, running 12 seconds off her personal best set a week earlier. For the men, sophomore Sam Kim (La Jolla, Calif. / Phillips Exeter (N.H.)) was 22nd in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.10, 7th in D3.

In relay action, the 4x400 team of Lapa, Hattan, first-year Hannah Bohbot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos) and Hiltunen were closest to scoring in 10th place with a time of 4:07.13. The men's 4x400 team of sophomore Dean Carey (New York, N.Y. / Stuyvesant), senior Jacob Grant (Rockville Center, N.Y. / South Side), Kim and senior Jamie O'Neil (Auburndale, Mass. / Newton North) were 11th in 3:25.01. In the 4x100, the women took 14th with a time of 43.98 seconds, just off the season-best by 0.01. The foursome was made up of Lapa, Campbell, sophomore Smiley Huynh (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx H.S. of Science) and Hiltunen. The men's 4x100 were 15th overall with a time of 43.03 seconds from the squad of first-year Danny Krigman (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford), Carey, junior Dean Campbell (Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. / Manchester-Essex Regional) and sophomore Parker Jones (Westbury, N.Y. / Packer Collegiate Institute).

The Judges will wrap up the regular season on Thursday at the MIT Last Chance Meet.
