Morris-Evans wins hurdles, earns three top-eight finishes at MIT

WALTHAM, Mass. -- This Saturday, the Brandeis Track and Field teams competed in a non scoring contest at the Gordon Kelly Invitational at MIT University in Cambridge, MA.

TOP WOMEN'S PERFORMERS

  • Sophomore Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) won the 60-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 9.36 seconds, 0.14 seconds behind her near-record run last week. 

  • In the 200-meter dash, Shaniece Nugent (Hartford, Conn. / Lawrence Academy) set a personal record, placing 2nd with a time of 27.97 seconds. Junior Ianna Gilbert (Queens, N.Y. / Young Women's Leadership School of Queens) finished 10th with a time of 29.04 seconds and sophomore Hailey Crane (Ovid, N.Y. / South Seneca) finished 15th with a time of 29.80 seconds.

  • In the 60-meter dash, senior Devin Hiltunen (Quincy, MA / North Quincy) placed 7th with a time of 8.28 seconds. This score qualified her for the finals, though she did not run in them. Junior Smiley Huynh (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx H.S. of Science) placed just behind Hiltunen in 9th, with a time of 8.31 seconds.

  • Personal records were set by all three competitors in the shot put. First-year Emma Liu (Las Vegas, Nev. / Phillips Exeter Academy) placed 14th with a distance of 9.68 meters (31-9 ¼), first-year Diane Meyer (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) placed 18th with a distance of 9.14 meters (30-0), and sophomore Kate Hurlbert (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) placed 20th with a distance of 8.98 meters (29-5 ½). These are the three best team scores this season.

TOP MEN'S PERFORMERS

  • Senior Dion Morris-Evans (Canal Fulton, Ohio / Northwest) had a very impressive day. He won the 60-meter hurdles, setting a personal record with a time of 8.66 seconds. This was a team season-best and is 6th best in the UAA as of February 11th. Morris-Evans also placed 5th in the high jump, with a distance of 1.82 meters (5-11 ½), and 7th in the long jump, with a distance of 5.90 meters (19-4 ¼).

  • First-year TJ Showstead (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth North) set a personal record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.72 seconds. He also placed 4th in his first-ever 400-meter dash with a time of 55.76, and 6th in the 60-meter hurdle with a time of 9.78 seconds.

  • In the triple jump, two personal records were set by junior Ori Slotky (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) and sophomore Lin Lin Hutchison (Portland, Ore. / Ida B. Wells). Slotky placed 3rd with a distance of 12.76 meters (41-10 ½), setting the team season-high as well in the process. Hutchison placed just behind Slotky in 4th place, with a distance of 12.25 meters (40-2 ½).

  • Two more personal records were set in the shot put by sophomore Cam Peirce (Kittery, Maine / Portsmouth Christian Academy) and senior Jonathan Hau (Taipei, Taiwan / Taipei American School). Peirce recorded a team season-high distance of 12.32 meters (40-5), and Hau followed right behind with a distance of 11.97 meters (39-3 ¼). Hau also placed third in the weight throw with a distance of 12.78m (41-11 ¼).
