WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University indoor track and field team played host to the 2023 University Athletic Association championships this weekend. The Judges had nine total scoring performances on the second day of action as the men finished in sixth place with 21 points, while the women were seventh with 20 points.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- The best individual performance of the day came from men's senior Dion Morris-Evans (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest), who finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.55 seconds. Seeded sixth after the prelims, he shaved a full tenth of a second off his time in the finals.
- The men also had the highest-scoring event of the day, placing two top-eight finishers in the shot put. Sophomore Cam Peirce (Kittery, Maine / Portsmouth Christian Academy) took sixth place with a toss of 12.92 meters (42-4 ¾). Peirce set a personal record in the shot put for the second weekend in a row, exceeding his previous best by just under half a meter. Senior Jonathan Hau (Taipei, Taiwan / Taipei American School) place seventh with a throw of 12.72 meters (41-8 ¾), also a significant improvement over his previous best, which was 12.17 meters from last week at Wheaton.
- Four other Judges matched Peirce with sixth-place finishes. On the men's side, first-year TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass. / Newburyport) lowered his p.r. in the 800-meter run for the second day in a row with a time of 1:53.84.
- For the women, junior Liz Korn (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) was sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 59.98 seconds, breaking one minute for the second indoor meet in a row. First-year Shaniece Nugent (Hartford, Conn. / Lawrence Academy) tied her p.r. with a distance of 10.98 meters (36-¼)
- Junior Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester), after finishing seventh in the prelims yesterday, took 8th in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.28 – 0.03 better than her qualifying time.
- The Judges also had two scoring relays. The women's 4x400 team of junior Liz Korn (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont), senior Yahni Lapa (West Newton, Mass./Newton North), senior Devin Hiltunen and sophomore Hannah Bobot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos) were sixth in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:06.88.
- On the men's side, Morris Evans, junior Samuel Kim (La Jolla, Calif. / Phillips Exeter (N.H.) first-year Leo Schiappa (Wareham, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) and sophomore Danny Krigman Krigman (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) were seventh in the 4x400 with a time of 3:29.99.
- Washington University won both the men's and women's meets by narrow margins. The Bears won by four (194-190) over Chicago on the women's side and by 3.6 on the men's side over Carnegie Mellon (144-140.3)
