Premo, x-country runners claim UAA honors, Sept. 22

WALTHAM, Mass. - Brandeis University sophomore cross country runners Marie Lemay of Saco, Maine, and Paul Norton of Amherst, Mass., and senior forward Ben Premo of Florence, Mass., of the men's soccer team have been selected as the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for September 22.

Lemay led the Judges to third place overall out of 41 teams at the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational on Sept. 20. Brandeis finished behind only Amherst College, the top-ranked team in Division III, and No. 23 MIT while coming in two points ahead of No. 11 Colby College. Lemay covered the five-kilometer course in a personal-best 18:43 to finish in 11th place overall and ninth among Division III runners. She improved her time by 38 seconds over the same course last year.

Norton helped the Brandeis men, ranked No. 30 in the nation in Division III, to a seventh-place finish out of 38 teams at UMass Dartmouth by running a personal-best 25:08 over five miles to finish in third place. He was just four seconds behind the race winner from Division I Northeastern University and was 45 seconds better than his performance at the UMD course in 2007. This was the first UAA Athlete of the Week honor for both Lemay and Norton.

Premo earned UAA Player of the Week honors for the fifth time in his career. He scored both game-winning goals in a 2-0 week for the Judges. In a 4-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College on Sept. 15, Premo netted the game-winner 17:12 into the contest. On Sept. 17, he scored with just 50 seconds left in the second overtime to give Brandeis a 2-1 win at WPI in their first road contest of the season. With the two goals, plus one scored on Sept. 22 against Newbury College, Premo now stands in sole possession of sixth place on Brandeis's goal scoring list with 35 and seventh in points with 91. Overall, coach Mike Coven's Judges are 6-1 this season. They are next in action Saturday, Sept. 29 at Wheaton College.
