WALTHAM, Mass. – In their first major meet of the 2012 season, the Brandeis men's cross country team finished fifth at the UMass Dartmouth Shriner's Invitational out of 39 teams.
The Brandeis men put three runners in the top 20. The top individual performance of the day came from junior Ed Colvin (Roslindale, Mass./Catholic Memorial School), who finished the race seventh out of 293 runners. He covered the eight-kilometer course in 25:11, about 30 seconds out of the top spot. Senior Alex Kramer (No. Andover, Mass./No. Andover) was not far behind Colvin, finishing nine seconds back in 12th place. Classmate Mik Kern (Groton, N.Y./Groton) also had a top-20 finish, coming in 19th in 25:36.
Sophomore Greg Bray (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) was next to cross the finish line, placing 77th with a time of 26:51, while junior Jake Newfield (Needham, Mass./Needham) rounded out the Brandeis finishers in 100th place with a time of 27:08, giving the Judges' top 5 a spread of 1:58. The team's 206 points were eight behind Coast Guard for fourth place.
Brandeis is next in action on Oct. 6 at the Open New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston.
