Softball collects second doubleheader sweep of season, 7-2 & 4-1, over Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine (taken from a Bowdoin College press release) - Brandeis University improved to 16-21 with a Friday sweep of Bowdoin College, 7-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two. The Judges have won three straight and will travel to play at Colby on Saturday. Bowdoin falls to 15-17 on the year and will host Wesleyan tomorrow.

Brandeis pitcher Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) singlehandedly led her team to victory in game one, going 3-4 at the plate with 2 RBI and tossing a complete game with one earned run to lead the Judges to a 7-2 win in the opening contest. With the game tied at 1-1 entering the fifth inning, Brandeis scored five in the frame to take control of the contest. Streilein sparked the rally with a two-run, bases loaded single to put the Judges ahead for good. Jessica Paris led Bowdoin with a pair of hits, while Karen Reni took the loss for the Polar Bears, allowing five earned runs over seven innings.

Brandeis scored a single run in the first and third innings, and added two insurance runs in the seventh inning to seal the sweep. The Judges went ahead in the first on a run-scoring double by Mari Levine (Hopkinton, Mass.) and added another run in the third as Elissa Glucksman (Stamford, Conn.) came home on a passed ball. Bowdoin cut into the lead in the fourth when Sarah Stern plated Danielle Chagnon on a groundball out. But that would be all that pitcher Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) would allow, as the Judges' hurler scattered just three hits and struck out four in the win. Brittany Ogden took the loss, allowing three earned runs and seven hits.
