WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team needed just 10 innings today to complete a sweep of the visiting Husson College Eagles. The Judges won game one, 8-0, and took the second contest by a 10-1 score.

Brandeis (11-12) was paced by sophomore pitcher Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) in the opener. Volpe tossed a two-hit shutout in game one, facing just one batter over the minimum. She also hit a three-run home run as part of a four-run first inning. It was Volpe's second round-tripper of the season.

The Judges also scored four in the third frame, helped by another three-run home run, this time by junior catcher Christina McWilliams (Billerica, Mass.) Every Brandeis batter but one had a hit in the first game, with only senior 3B Bri Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) producing a multi-hit game as she went 2-3 with an RBI double in the opening frame.

Husson (1-11) got on the board early in game two, as junior starting pitcher Carolyn McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) helped her own cause with a tremendous home run to right-center field in the top of the first inning.

Brandeis answered in the bottom of the first, however, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs. The first eight batters reached base, with Smith knocking another RBI double. Another big blow came from starting pitcher Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.), who singled to right with runners on first and second. Both Brandeis players on base scored when the ball scooted through the legs of the right fielder.

The Judges reached the eight-run rule with three more runs in the second inning, including an RBI single to left by Volpe that again produced an extra run after getting by an outfielder.

Volpe finished the second game going 2-2 with two RBI and two runs scored and was 3-5 with five RBI and three runs scored for the day. McWilliams was 2-2 with an RBI in the second contest to finish 3-4 with four runs batted in. Streilein picked up the victory in the nightcap by scattering eight hits and striking out seven and walking none to improve to 8-4 on the season.

McEvoy was the hitting star in game two for the Eagles, going 2-3 with the home run. Sophomore 3B Jordon Pruett (Manchester, Maine) went 1-2 with a double in the second game and was one of two Husson players with a hit in the opener. Sophomore catcher Shawna Bell (Corinth, Maine) also had a two-bagger in game two.
