Softball wins northern opener in extra innings at MIT, 3-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) scattered seven hits and struck out seven over eight innings of work today as the Brandeis University softball team won in its first contest back from Florida, 3-1, over MIT.

Brandeis (4-7) opened the scoring in the third inning with Streilein helping her own cause. After senior 3B Elissa Glucksman (Stratford, Conn.) walked, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice by sophomore CF Amelia Schimmel (Oakland, Calif.), Streilein doubled to left field to give the Judges a 1-0 lead.

It looked like that lead would stand up after Streilein worked her way out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam with a grounder to third base that got a force at the plate and a strikeout to end the fourth inning. MIT (1-1) loaded the bases again in the sixth inning with one away. Streilein didn't get out unscathed, as Engineer sophomore DP Holly Jeffrey singled home a run, but another force at the plate and a comebacker to the circle minimized the damage.

The Judges looked to pull back ahead with two hits in the top of the seventh, but weren't able to push the run across. Streilein kept the hosts in check in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, senior SS Mari Levine (Hopkinton, Mass.) bunted classmate Bri Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) to third to open the inning and back-to-back doubles by sophomore RF Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) and DP Dani Mayer (Larkspur, Calif.) driving in runs to gave the Judges a 3-1 lead. Streilein then retired the side in otrder in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory.

In addition to her complete game on the mound that improved her to 3-3 on the season Streilein also went 2-4 with an RBI and a double on the afternoon. Volpe and Mayer were also 2-4 with a double and run batted in.

For MIT, sophomore SS Amanda Jason, who went 2-4 with a run scored was the only multiple hitter. Sophomore Leah Bogsted suffered the loss despite pitching all eight innings.
