ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The University of Rochester softball
team scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning today to
erase a one-run deficit and defeat the Brandeis University Judges,
7-2, in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest at the
Seminole Country Softball Complex.
Brandeis (2-4, 1-3 UAA) opened the scoring in the second inning
when junior RF Christina McWilliams (Billerica, Mass.) singled to
centerfield with two outs, plating senior 1B Bri Smith (Tewksbury,
Mass.) and sophomore pitcher Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.).
Junior C Caitlin Lukacs (Sodus Point, N.Y.) doubled after that, but
the Judges were unable to bring home another run.
Rochester (3-3, 2-2 UAA) got one run back in the fifth inning, but
Volpe got out of a jam with runners on second and third with one
out by inducing a pair of ground ball outs. In the sixth inning,
the Yellowjackets had three straight singles to open the frame,
tying the score and chasing Volpe. UR then added five more runs,
taking advantage of control problems by the Brandeis reliever, who
walked four batters in two-thirds of an inning.
Late rally lifts Rochester softball past Brandeis, 7-2
