Softball blanked by Smith, 7-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Smith College rookie pitcher Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, N.Y.) tossed a complete-game five-hit shutout today as the Pioneers defeated the host Brandeis University Judges, 7-0, on Marcus Field.

Smith (14-13) moved a game over .500 thanks to Hiltzik, who also contributed an RBI single at the plate in the second inning, the only run her team would need. In the circle, she struck out two and walked one to improve to 6-8 on the season.

Offensively, Smith was paced by senior CF Sara Watson (Kent, Wash.), who was 4-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Rookie 3B Erin Quinn (Northbrook, Ill.) had Smith's other multiple RBI game, going 2-3 with two RBI, both coming the fourth inning on a two-out single.

Brandeis (13-20) was shut out for the third straight contest despite getting three doubles in the game. Sophomore DP Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) was the team's only multiple hitter, going 2-3 with a two-bagger. The Judges' other doubles came from senior 1B Bri Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) and junior catcher Christina McWilliams (Billerica, Mass.). Sophomore Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) fell to 5-11 on the season after giving up 11 hits and seven earned runs.

Brandeis will take on Tufts University at home tomorrow at 4:00 pm, while Smith is at local rival Amherst College tomorrow at the same time.
