Softball hangs with No. 13 Tufts before falling, 4-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) hit her team-leading third home run of the season and tossed a complete game today, but it wasn't enough as the host Judges fell to the Tufts University Jumbos, 4-2, on Marcus Field.

Brandeis (13-21) jumped on the board first in the fourth inning. With two away, Streilein's round-tripper to right field was the Judges' first hit of the contest.

Tufts (20-10), the No. 13 team in the nation, answered in the top of the fifth. With runners on second and third and one away, sophomore Erica Bailey (Scottsdale, Ariz.) laced a two-run single centerfield that plated rookie LF Laura Chapman (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore 2B Danielle Lopez (Davers, Mass.)

The Judges evened the game in the bottom of the inning. Senior 1B Bri Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore DP Dani Mayer (Larkspur, Calif.) hit a ground-rule double that stuck underneath the windscreen in left field to knot the game at two.

The Jumbos got the winning runs in the top of the sixth. Chapman plated pinch runner Roni Herbst (Montclair, N.J.) for the game-winner, while rookie RF Maya Ripecky (Chicago, Ill.) came home on a wild pitch for an insurance run.

Tufts senior pitcher Julia Brenta (San Anselmo, Calif.) retired six of the last seven Brandeis batters to end the game and improve to 6-2 on the season. She struck out seven while walking none and allowing just four Brandeis hits. Streilein fell to 8-8 on the season for Brandeis.
