WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University softball team saw its
six-game winning streak come to a close today as the Judges dropped
a 6-3 decision to the visiting Fitchburg State College Falcons on
Marcus Field.
Brandeis (8-9), playing as the visiting team because the game was
moved from Fitchburg, opened the scoring in the top of the second
inning. With one away, sophomore LF Vicki Roomet (Jamaica, N.Y.)
singled to score classmate 3B Samantha Worth (Londonderry,
N.H.).
The Falcons answered with two runs in the bottom of the third.
Senior 2B Danielle McDonald (Brockton, Mass.) tied the game with an
RBI single, while senior SS Keri Kravetz (West Bridgewater, Mass.)
put FSC ahead with a run-producing double.
Brandeis tied the game in the top of the fourth after Roomet led
off with a double and came home two batters later on a single by
junior pitcher Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.). Kravetz
then gave Fitchburg State the game-winning runs in the fifth with
her third home run of the season, a two-run shot. The Judges got
one run back in the sixth on rookie 1B Allie Mussen's (Franklin
Square, N.Y.) second round-tripper of the season, cutting the lead
to 4-3. FSC added two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame to
ice the contest.
Kravetz was the big hitter of the day for Fitchburg State, going
2-3 with three RBI and a run scored. She had two of the Falcons'
extra-base hits with her double and home run. Rookie 1B Leigh
Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass.) was 1-3 with an RBI double, while
McDonald, junior Jessie Krause (Cornwall, N.Y.) and rookie DP Jenn
Coutoure (Chicopee, Mass.) all had multiple-hit performances.
Brandeis was led at the plate by junior RF Natalie Volpe
(Southington, Conn.), who went 3-4. Roomet and Streilein also added
two-hit performances.
On the hill, Streilein suffered the loss to fall to 2-5. She gave
up six earned runs on 12 hits, striking out four and walking two.
Senior Michelle Yuille (Acushnet, Mass.) improved to 4-7 with a
complete-game 10-hitter. Yuille gave up three runs (two earned) and
struck out three without walking a batter.
