WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior hurler Natalie Volpe (Southington,
Conn.) had an outstanding day in the circle and at the plate to
lead the Brandeis University softball team past Regis College,
11-0, on Marcus Field today.
Volpe went 4-4 with a pair of home runs and a double, falling a
triple short of hitting for the cycle. She drove in three runs and
scored twice. As a pitcher, she held the Pride to just one hit in
five innings of work, facing three batters over the minimum. Volpe
struck out eight Regis batters while walking one and hitting a
batter.
Brandeis (16-16) got all the runs they would need in the first
inning when Volpe went deep for the third time this season to
center field with one on and one out. The Judges added four more in
the third on a solo shot by Volpe and a three-run blast by rookie
RF Erin Ross (Manalapan, N.J.).
Senior CF Marissa Rubin (Teaneck, N.J.) singled home a run in the
fourth, while rookie SS Chelsea Korp (Worcester, Mass.) came home
on a successful double steal. The Judges, who played as the
visiting team, scored three runs in the top of the fifth on a
two-run home run by junior Dani Mayer (Larkspur, Calif.) in her
only plate appearance of the game and another on a wild pitch. It
was Mayer's team-leading eighth round-tripper of the season.
In addition to Volpe's big day, sophomore 3B Samantha Worth
(Londonderry, N.H.) was 3-3 with a run scored, while Rubin and
junior Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) also had two
hits.
Regis (6-25) got their only hit in the third inning when sophomore
CF Ashley Paolini (Epping, N.H.) singled down the left field line,
but she was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double by
Brandeis senior co-captain Christina McWilliams (Billerica, Mass.).
Sophomore Kristen Tavares (Acushnet, Mass.) suffered the loss for
the Pride.
Volpe does it all as softball tops Regis, 11-0
