ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Brandeis University softball team
dropped its second game of the season to eighth-ranked Emory
University, 8-0, in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest
in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Brandeis (4-4, 2-4 UAA) mustered just one hit against Emory junior
Shanon Andersen (Sahuarita, Ariz.), a two-out single in the sixth
inning by rookie 3B Danielle Lavallee (Sutton, Mass.). The Judges
worked Andersen for seven walks, allowing them to get some scoring
opportunities, but 11 strikeouts counteracted the wildness.
Andersen also had the hot bat for the Eagles, going 2-4 with three
RBI and a two-run home run. The Eagles opened the game with three
straight infield hits, all of which scored. They added single runs
in the second, third and sixth innings before Andersen's two-run
shot to centerfield in the seventh inning. Junior catcher Rachel
Blume (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) had the only other extra-base hit for
Emory, a double.
Brandeis senior Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) suffered her
first loss of the season, allowing six hits and five runs (four
earned) in three innings of work. She struck out three and walked
two, falling to 2-1 on the campaign. Sophomore Emily Vaillette
(Milford, N.H.) tossed the final four frames, giving up three
earned runs on five hits and three walks.
