Softball qualifies for ECAC Tournament

WALTHAM, Mass. – For the eighth-straight season, the Brandeis University softball team will compete in postseason action. The Judges were selected as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Division III Softball Tournament.

Brandeis (21-16) will host a double elimination, four-team tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Marcus Field. Top-seeded WPI (28-12) and the Judges will both compete, and a pair of play-in games on Wednesday will determine the final two participants. No. 3 Smith (19-13) will face No. 6 Albertus Magnus (17-17), while Salve Regina (20-17) will face Castleton State (16-15) in the 4 vs. 5 matchup. The Judges' first game will be on Saturday at noon against the winner of the game between Smith and Albertus Magnus.

Brandeis has faced two other tournament teams – Salve Regina and WPI – this year. The Judges defeated Salve Regina, 7-2, on the first day of their annual Florida trip. Junior Anya Kamber of Sammamish, Wash., led the way with three hits and three runs. Classmate Amanda Genovese of North Haven, Conn., had a pair of hits and two stolen bases, while senior Melissa Nolan of Windsor, Conn., had two hits, two runs, and pitched three innings of relief. The Engineers swept Brandeis by scores of 8-4 and 20-0 on April 16.

The Judges are led by a trio of All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selections. Liana Moss of Agoura Hills, Calif., was named the conference rookie of the year and a first-team infielder, after batting .410 with a team-high seven home runs on the season. Genovese led Brandeis with a .455 batting average, .510 on base percentage and 27 stolen bases, and was a first-team selection after being named a first-team All-American last year. Kamber was named to the second team. She batted .427 and led the Judges in hits, doubles and RBIs.

Coach Jessica Johnson's squad has played in the ECAC Tournament each of the last three seasons. The Judges were the second seed last year as well, but fell, 6-4, to seventh-seeded Worcester State. Brandeis finished third in the tournament in 2011 and second in 2012.

The Judges won their last six games of the regular season to qualify for postseason play. Brandeis went 3-5 in conference play, including wins over then-#18 Washington University, and the team's first-ever victory over Emory, who was ninth in the country at the time.
