Cote, Miller named UAA Pitchers of the Week, April 13

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University pitchers have swept the University Athletic Association (UAA) Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending on April 12. Senior Nikki Cote of Shelton, Conn., was honored for softball, while junior Sam Miller ofSudbury, Mass., was recognized for baseball.

      Cote made her third start of the season against Worcester State University on Sunday, April 12, in the second game of a doubleheader. She blanked the Lancers, 2-0, for her third career shutout and ninth career complete game. Cote allowed just one hit over the seven innings, a double in the fourth that marked the only WSU player to advance past first base. She faced three batters over the minimum, striking out six and walking three to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 1.40 earned-run average.

      Miller made two starts for the Judges, tossing complete-game victories in both, including a milestone win. On Tuesday, April 7, he threw a nine-inning complete game – also against Worcester State – to give Brandeis head coach Pete Varney his 700thcareer victory as the Judges defeated the Lancers, 7-2. Miller allowed just three hits in his career-long outing, striking out six and walking three. On Sunday, April 12, Miller went the distance again, this time in seven innings, as Brandeis completed a doubleheader sweep of Plymouth State University, 7-2. Miller allowed six hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts as Varney earned win No. 702. Miller allowed a 1.29 earned-run average and a .155 opponents' batting average in the two contests. He currently leads the UAA with four complete games and is tied for second with five victories. Miller is 5-2 with a 3.30 ERA overall.

      Brandeis softball is 9-11 on the season headed into a doubleheader at Salve Regina this afternoon. Their next home game in Friday at 3 p.m. against UMass Boston. The baseball team is on a four-game winning streak to bring their record to 11-14 entering a contest at Johnson and Wales University. The Judges' next home game is April 24 at 3 p.m. against Salve Regina.

      Cote is a 2011 graduate of St. Joseph's High School.

      Miller is a 2012 graduate of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School.
