Sullivan, Novotny named to UAA All-Tournament Team

WALTHAM, Mass. – Two Brandeis University seniors have been named to the 2016 University Athletic Association Softball All-Tournament team. Catcher Danielle Novotny of Milford, N.J., and third baseman Madison Sullivan of Dover, N.H., were both honored for the Judges, who finished in second place at the March 8-13 tournament.

Novotny led the UAA in batting average at .483, going 14-for-29. She had one triple, six RBI and eight runs scored. She also led the conference with six stolen bases in the 10 games without getting caught. Her 14 hits were tied for second in the league. Novotny hit safely in nine of the 10 UAA games, with two hits in five of them. Her top performance came in a 13-6 win over Rochester on March 11, when she went 1-3 with two walks, two RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored.

Sullivan finished third in the conference in batting average (14-32, .438) and RBI (12), while leading the circuit with seven doubles. She was also third with three home runs and second with 30 total bases. Sullivan had hits in eight of the 10 games, including a couple of three-hit performances. She homered in three-straight contests, helping the Judges to wins over Rochester, NYU and Case Western Reserve. Her blast against NYU on March 12 snapped a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Judges went 6-4 under first-year head coach Danielle DelPonte at the 2016 UAA Championship tournament, held in Altamonte Springs, Fla., on March 8-13. Their second-place finish was their highest since 2010, the last time they reached the NCAA tournament. Their six wins were the most in UAA play since the first conference tournament in 1995. Overall, the Judges are 10-7 this season. Their next games are March 30 at home against Wellesley College at 3 p.m.

 

Novotny is a 2012 graduate of Delaware Valley High School.

Sullivan is a 2012 graduate of Dover High School.
