WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis softball senior 3B Madison Sullivan (Concord, N.H./Concord) continued her climb up the Judges' career home run list, but it wasn't enough as the Judges dropped a 9-1 decision to Babson today on Marcus Field. The Judges fall to 11-12 on the season, the Beavers improve to 16-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Babson outhit Brandeis, 16-6, as 10 different Beavers had hits, including five with multiple hits.
  • The visitors opened the scoring with three singles in the first inning, with sophomore Samantha Smith (Hillborough, N.J./Immaculata) scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Brandeis junior starter Melissa Soleimani (Somerset, Mass./Somerset Berkley Regional) escaped further damage by getting back-to-back strikeouts.
  • Babson exploded for six runs on six hits and two Brandeis errors in the third inning.
  • The first four hitters reached base on hits, with rookie catcher Annie Quine (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) driving in two runs with a double and scoring on a Leslie Moore (Atkinson, N.H./Central Catholic) two-bagger.
  • After sophomore Sadie-Rose Apfel (Stamford, Conn./Westill) came on in relief, the next two Babson runs scored on errors.
  • Babson sophomore Ali Reilly (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) held Brandeis hitless over the first three-and-two-thirds innings, allowing runners on a first-inning error and third-inning walk.
  • Reilly got the win and improved to 9-7 on the season.
  • The Judges finally broke through when senior Madison Sullivan stroked her fifth home run of the season to right field.
  • The homer was the 16th of Sullivan's career moving her into a tie for sixth on the career list with Lauren Porcaro '12.
  • Brandeis had a chance to get to Reilly in the bottom of the sixth, as they loaded the bases with one away on two singles and a walk.
  • Reilly got the second out on a comebacker to the circle, firing home for the force. She ended the inning with grounder to short.
  • The Beavers' Catherine Pitts (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and Rachel Bullard (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) drove in runs in the seventh to make it a 9-1 final.
  • Babson's Moore had an identical stat-line to the previous game between the two teams, going 3-4 with one run and one RBI. She doubled today instead of homering.
