Summer Check-In with Melissa Rothenberg '21

Summer Check-In With Melissa Rothenberg '21

Another in a series, we check in with Brandeis student-athletes about how they've handled the unique situations presented by the spring and summer of 2020.

Melissa Rothenberg '21 earned All-UAA honors as a junior with two home runs and two doubles in six games. She picked up where she left off in the team's 2019 NCAA tournament run, when she earned a spot on the Ithaca All-Regional team. Rothenberg is an Economics, Business and Environmental Studies triple major who did a virtual internship with Loop Marketing this summer.

How did your classes go last semester? Did you do well with virtual learning?

In the end, my classes went well. Transitioning to online was very difficult and I don't feel like it was the best learning style for me, but my teachers were all very understanding and helpful.

How did you spend your free time?

I've spent a lot of time working out. Otherwise, I've been pretty busy between my virtual internship and trying to learn new skills like coding.

What's the best movie or show you saw?

I binged Ozark and How To Get Away With Murder and loved both.

How have you kept engaged with your coaches and teammates?

Our team has been in contact very frequently between just checking up on each other and the new coach search. In the beginning, we had a couple of trivia nights to keep it fun!

How have you kept in shape for your sport?

I started quarantine with the crazy thought that I would train for a marathon. About halfway through I decided to give up, but running has helped me stay in shape along with the great workouts that [strength and conditioning coach Jay] Mendoza has given us.

What's the first thing you want to do when you get back onto campus?

Definitely see my friends and get a good workout in Gosman, as gyms are still closed in NJ!
