#22 softball sweeps Occidental, 8-3 and 11-3, to open season

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Brandeis University softball team opened its 2022 campaign successfully today as the Judges swept Occidental College, 8-3 and 11-3, on the West Coast as part of their February break trip to California. With the wins, the Judges, ranked #22 in Division III in the preseason by the NFCA, improve to 2-0. The Tigers fall to 2-6 on the campaign.

Senior outfielder Amidori Anderson (Sparks, Nev. / Spanish Springs) was the big hitter for the Judges on the day, going 3-for-7 with a double, four RBI, four runs scored and three stolen bases. Anderson drove in two runs in each game, plating two with a double in the top of the first inning of the first game. She added two more RBI in the sixth inning of Game Two. All three of her stolen bases came in the opener.

Sophomore Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla. / The Benjamin School) had a terrific all-around afternoon. At the plate, she went 4-for-8 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. She singled in the game-tying run in the fifth inning of Game 2 and had a two-run double in the sixth. Cohen also earned the win in the circle in the opener, tossing four innings of five-hit relief, allowing one earned run and striking out five without issuing a walk.

First-year 1B Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass. / Marianapolis Prep.) drove in the game-winning run in the opening runs in her first collegiate at-bat, with a two-run single. Graduate student SS Jolie Fujita (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) scored four run on the day, two in each game, while grad student CF Melissa Rothenberg (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) drove in three, including a two-run double in Game 2.

Sophomore Rebecca Guerci (Roslyn, N.Y. / Herricks) earned the win in the circle in Game Two with six innings of work. She allowed six hits and three earned runs, striking out two and walking none. She threw 52 of her 65 pitches for strikes.

The Judges return to action on Wednesday afternoon at 7 p.m. Eastern (4 Pacific) against the 3-0 University of La Verne Leopards.
