Softball lands five on All-UAA team

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team had five representatives on the 2022 All-University Athletic Association team. Sophomore Alex Cohen of West Palm Beach, Florida, was named to the All-UAA first team as a pitcher/designated player, while graduate student shortstop Jolie Fujita of Honolulu, Hawaii, was a first-team infielder. Senior leftfielder Amidori Anderson of Sparks, Nevada, was second-team outfield selection, while senior 2B Marley Felder of Miami, Florida and sophomore 3B Haley Nash of Delmar, New York, were second-team infielders.

Cohen had a terrific all-around campaign for the Judges to earn All-UAA honors for the second year in a row. In the circle, she went 11-5 with six complete games, plus one save in relief posting a 2.40 earned-run average. Cohen was second in the UAA with 105 strikeouts, just the seventh season of 100 or more Ks in school history.  She tied for third in the league in wins and was sixth in ERA. She was twice named UAA Pitcher of the Week. At the plate, Cohen was second on the team with a .311 batting average and led the squad with 11 doubles. She had 19 RBI, 18 runs scored and one home run. 

Fujita earned All-Association honors for the fourth year in a row, with this being her first first-team selection since 2019. The UAA did not distinguish between first- and second-teams in the 2020 and 2021 COVID-19 seasons. This year, Fujita batted .303 with 20 RBI and 20 runs scored – both fourth on the team - in 40 games. She had 10 doubles, one triple and four home runs. Twelve of her 20 RBI came in UAA play, where she hit .311 with seven doubles and two home runs. For her career, Fujita finished with a .350 career batting average with 78 RBI and 96 runs scored. She had 27 doubles, seven triples and 11 home runs. She ranks among Brandeis's top 20 all-time in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, RBI, home runs and doubles. Her seven triples are tied for second on Brandeis's career list.

Anderson had her finest season to earn her first career All-UAA honor. She led the team with a .354 batting average, ninth-best in the UAA, and in stolen bases with 13, sixth in the league. Her six home runs were second-most on the team and third in the conference. Anderson also led the Judges with 23 runs scored and was second with 21 RBI. She also had four doubles and a triple, finishing with 40 hits, eighth most in the conference. Anderson also led the team with a .566 slugging percentage and a .378 on-base percentage. Anderson finished her career as a .311 hitter with 31 RBI, 39 runs scored,  seven home runs and eight doubles.

Felder was named All-UAA for the fourth time, earning a spot on the second team for the second time along with her rookie season in 2019. Felder matched Cohen with a .311 batting average, as both had 42 hits in 135 at-bats this season. Felder was second on the squad behind Anderson with 22 runs scored, while driving in 12 runs, hitting primarily out of the leadoff spot in the batting order. She had seven doubles and four stolen bases. Felder wraps her career as a .325 hitter with 108 hits, 17 doubles, two triples and two home runs. She drove in 52 runs and scored 62 in her career.

Nash adds her second All-UAA selection to go with a second-team All-New England honor as a first year. She batted .304 and led the Judges with 24 RBI and seven home runs, finishing eighth and second in the UAA, respectively. Nash also had five doubles and 20 runs scored. Nash was second on the team with a .373 on-base percentage and with a .536 slugging percentage. Four of Nash's home runs and 12 of her RBI came in UAA play, when she finished second on the team with a .327 batting average.

The Brandeis University softball team ended their 2022 season with a 22-18 record, their 14th 20-win season in program history. The Judges will six starters for the 2023 campaign, including Cohen and Nash.
