Cohen has a career day as the Judges sweep doubleheader at Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team took a short trip to take on the Wentworth Leopards. The Judges rode two great pitching performances on the day to take both games, 3-0 and 4-0.

 

TEAM RECORD

  • Brandeis: 3-1
  • Wentworth: 8-4

 

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1

  • Brandeis started the scoring in the top of the first inning when junior third baseman Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central) knocked a double to left field, scoring first-year left fielder Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C. / Franklin Academy).
  • After several scoreless innings from both teams, Nash homered to left center field, her second RBI of the game and her first home run of the season.
  • In the next inning, Hunt doubled to left field, scoring senior right fielder Lily Medici (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown North) to get to the final score of 3-0.
  • First-year starter Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) pitched a complete game, allowing zero runs and one hit while striking out 12 batters and walking two.
  • Kannan improved to 2-0 on the season.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME TWO

  • The Judges scored three of their four runs in the fifth inning
  • Medici and junior starter Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla. / The Benjamin School) both scored unearned runs on fielding errors in the inning.
  • Cohen also knocked a double to center field before she crossed the plate herself, scoring Hunt.
  • In the top of the sixth, first-year DP Elle Ehrlich (Falls Church, Va / Meridian) hit a single to center to score Hunt.
  • Cohen pitched a complete game, allowing zero runs and giving up three hits while striking out 15 batters and walking one.
  • Cohen improved to 1-1 on the season.

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES

  • Cohen's 15 strikeouts were a career-high and made for her fifth career 10-strikeout game.
  • Three hits allowed is also a career low for Cohen
  • Hunt finished 5-8 on the day with three runs, three doubles, and three stolen bases
  • Medici also finished 4-6 with two runs, a triple, and a double

The Judges return to action tomorrow Sunday, March 19th when Thomas College visits Brandeis for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Eastern.
