ATLANTA, Ga. – The Brandeis softball team continued their series with Emory today with a doubleheader that got pushed back due to a rain delay. The Eagles took game one in walk-off fashion, 2-1, while the Judges rode great pitching in the second game to win 4-2 and split the doubleheader.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 11-2, 6-1 UAA.
- Emory: 13-12, 3-3 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Brandeis 1, Emory 2)
- The Judges got on the board in the top of the first when junior third baseman Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central) knocked a single to third base.
- First-year center fielder Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C. / Franklin Academy) scored an unearned run on a throwing error by the Emory third baseman.
- The next five innings turned into a pitcher's duel between Brandeis' Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla. / The Benjamin School) and Emory's Mackenzie Duford.
- Each team only managed two hits a piece between the second and the sixth innings.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Emory shortstop Kayla Lang knocked a single to right field to start the rally.
- A couple batters later, Emory second baseman Ashley Chu singled to put the winning run on base.
- The very next batter, Emory left fielder Natalie Swift hit a double to right that scored Lang, and Chu also scored an unearned run on a fielding error to win the game for the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Brandeis 4, Emory 2)
- The Judges got out fast again in game two off an RBI single from first-year first baseman Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif. / San Juan Hills), scoring Hunt.
- Brandeis stayed hot in the second, scoring two more runs.
- Senior right fielder Lily Medici (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown North) hit a single to left center field to score Nash for the first run.
- The second run came off a single from Hunt which led to a fielding error that scored sophomore catcher Tristan Boyer (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield).
- The Eagles scored in the bottom of the second on a passed ball to make the score 3-1.
- A RBI single by Emory outfielder Page Nellis tightened the score to 3-2 in the third.
- The last run of the game came from the Judges in the top of the sixth when Nash doubled into left field to score Cohen, making the final score 4-2.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Junior starter Rebecca Guerci (Roslyn, N.Y. / Herricks) pitched 3.1 innings while only allowing three hits on the day.
- First-year pitcher Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) improved her record to 8-0 on the year while also only allowing three hits in relief of Guerci in game two.
