CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Brandeis University softball team was held to just five hits combined in a doubleheader as the Judges dropped a pair to #8-ranked Case Western Reserve, 3-0 and 10-0, in University Athletic Association action.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 11-7, 6-5 UAA.
- Case Western Reserve: 22-2, 8-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Though the Judges dropped the opener, 3-0, they had their chances against the Spartans.
- Despite managing just two hits, they drew four walks, putting runners on in six of seven innings, but Brandeis stranded eight runners on base.
- The hosts scored in the first inning on an RBI double by Anna Gobeyn.
- They added two more runs in the second when they loaded the bases with one out against starter Chandra Penton (Newton, Mass./Newton South) and LG Stevie Rieger greeted rookie reliever Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) with a two-run single up the middle.
- Kannan struck out the next two CWRU batters to escape further trouble, and did not allow a Spartan runner past second base the rest of the way.
- Case starter Lexi Miskey held Brandeis hitless until the sixth inning, when first-year 1B Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif / San Juan Hills) singled with one away. Junior 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central) drew a walk, but the Judges could not advance them any further.
- Sophomore Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass. / Marianapolis Prep.) had a leadoff single in the seventh, but again the Judges could not advance a runner past second as Jenna Jackich shut the door.
- In the second game, CWRU got to Kannan for three runs in the first on a Gobeyn home run after the Judges left the bases loaded in the top of the frame.
- Brandeis managed just one more hit the rest of the way, a single to lead off the third by rookie outfielder Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C. / Franklin Academy), but it wasn't enough as the Spartans blew things open with a five-run third inning.
- Penton took the loss for Brandeis in the opener, allowing three hits and three earned runs in 1.1 innings to fall to 0-1 on the season. Kannan threw three innings of work in game 2 and was saddled with the loss to fall to 8-3.
- Case's Miskey improved to 14-0 this season, while Jaklich earned a save in the opener, as the two combined to strike out 12 Judges. Hosey moved to 8-2 on the year with four shutout innings in the second game, fanning five.
