WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team celebrated Senior Day in style today as the Judges completed a four-game University Athletic Association series sweep of New York University with a 10-2 win in five innings. The victory extends the Judges' winning streak to seven games.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 18-9, 10-6 UAA.
  • NYU: 17-15, 6-10 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • For the second game in a row, NYU struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning.
  • After Brandeis starter Chandra Penton (Newton, Mass./Newton South) issued a pair of one-out walks, she retired the next hitter for the second out. NYU responded with a pair of two-out hits from 3B Samantha Burggraf and CF Chloe Blanc.
  • Violet catcher Lily Candelaria followed with another single to left, but left fielder Elle Ehrlich (Falls Church, Va./Meridian) threw out Burggraf trying to score from second.
  • The Judges bounced right back in the bottom of the first, starting with a one-out home run to left by first-year SS Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo).
  • A single by junior Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) and a walk to 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) put two runners on
  • First-year 1B Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif / San Juan Hills) doubled to center to tie the game at 2-all, while Ehrlich delivered a sacrifice fly to center to give the Judges the lead.
  • Cohen entered the circle in the top of the second, and after allowing a lead-off single, retired 12 of the last 13 hitters she faced.
  • Brandeis extended its lead to 4-2 in the third on a Burdenski sac fly, and the Judges blew things open in the fourth, scoring six runs. Burdenski added another RBI in the frame, while Nash had a two-run single.
  • Senior 2B Jamie Pippin (Redmond, Wash./Lake Washington) and rookie CF Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C./Franklin Acad.) each had RBI singles in the frame, while senior RF Lily Medici (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) had a bases-loaded walk as the Judges put the game out of reach.
