Cohen named UAA Pitcher of the Week for second time this season

WALTHAM, Mass. – For the third time this season. junior Alex Cohen of West Palm Beach, Florida, has earned University Athletic Association Player of the Week honors for the Brandeis University softball team, earning Pitcher of the Week accolades for April 17. This is Cohen's second recognition for pitching, to go with one for her hitting.

Cohen went 4-0 in the circle last week with a 1.17 ERA, including 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA in two UAA games. She struck out 18 in 24 innings without issuing a walk, including nine Ks in 11 innings in conference action.

Cohen started the week by shutting out Endicott, 1-0, on two hits and six Ks, then defeating Wellesley with six innings of five-hit ball, allowing two runs with 3 Ks.

In the Judges' four-game sweep of UAA rival NYU over the weekend, Cohen threw a complete game in Game 2 of the series, allowing four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks. She came on in relief of Game 4 and threw four shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out five.

Cohen also had a great week at the plate, hitting .385 (.538 in UAAs) with a triple, HR, and six RBI (HR, 2 RBI in UAAs).

Overall this season, Cohen owns a 7-4 record with a 3.21 earned-run average. She has 65 strikeouts and just five walks allowed in 56.2 innings, giving her a 13.60 strikeout-to-walk ratio that ranks seventh in Division III this season and an 0.88 walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP) of 0.88 that ranks 33rd. She is also batting .354, the second-highest on the team, with 20 RBI, tied for the team lead.

With an 18-9 record in head coach Dani Bishop's fourth season, the Judges are 10-6 in the UAA, in second place with one series to go. The Judges will meet third-place Washington University for four games this weekend starting Friday at 3 p.m.
