No. 15 Brandeis women complete season sweep of Carnegie Mellon, 66-51

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (taken from a CMU press release) -- The strong post play of the visiting #15 ranked Brandeis Judges was too much for the Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team as the Tartans lost 66-51 on Sunday, February 12 in Skibo Gymnasium.

Carnegie Melon (5-17, 0-11 UAA) received strong bench play to keep them within striking distance at 33-26 heading into halftime. Early in the second half the Tartans cut the deficit to five points at 35-30 but the Judges continued to pound away inside and draw fouls sending them to the free throw line. The Brandeis lead got as big as 18 points on two occasions, including 61-43 with 5:32 remaining before settling for a 15 point victory.

Jeannette Schilling came off the bench to lead the Tartans in scoring for the second straight game, with 12 points. Senior guard Dava Sommermeyer (Leonia, N.J.) added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Colleen Light contributed nine in the loss. The Judges were led by reserve Lauren Orlando’s (Peabody, Mass.) 15 points and Christine Clancy’s (Yarmouth, Maine) 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The Tartans made more field goals than the Judges for the game; however the Tartans only made three free throws, and two shots from behind the arc, compared to 20 free throws and six threes by Brandeis.
