CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Three players scored in double figures and
two more had nine points today as the Brandeis University women's
basketball team defeated Case Western Reserve University, 74-61, in
University Athletic Association (UAA) action today.
Brandeis (19-4, 9-4 UAA) was paced by 12 points from sophomore
forward Lauren Orlando (Peabody, Mass.), who hit five-of-eight from
the field with a 3-pointer and a free throw. Junior Jaime Capra
(Old Bridge, N.J.) added 11 points on four-of-10 with a trifecta,
while rookie Jessica Chapin (Mendon, N.Y.) had 11 off the bench and
dished a team-high five assists. Chapin doubled the output of the
Spartan reserves, as Brandeis outscored Case, 28-5, in bench
points. Senior Alison Chase (Farmington, Conn.) had nine points,
all in the first half, while seven of classmate Caitlin Malcolm's
(Windsor Locks, Conn.) nine came in the second. Sophomore reserve
forward Cassidy Dadaos (Healdsburg, Calif.) led all players with
eight rebounds. Brandeis shot 49 percent from the field (26-53),
including 57 percent from 3-point range (8-14), with six different
players connecting from beyond the arc.
Case (9-15, 1-12 UAA) got 17 points apiece from rookie Ashleigh
Tondo (McDonald, Ohio) and senior Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, Ohio).
Tondo was six-of-nine from the floor, hitting all four of her
3-point attempts, while Dempsey was six-for-12 overall and
three-of-seven from distance. Tondo had a fine all-around
performance, also contributing six rebounds, five assists, two
blocks and two steals. Case shot 40 percent from the field (23-58)
and 42 percent from 3-point range (8-19), but the Spartans were
hurt by 43 percent from the free-throw line (7-16).
The Spartans got off to a hot start, scoring the first seven points
of the contest, with Dempsey kicking things off with a trifecta
five seconds in. Brandeis went on a 12-4 run to take the lead, but
Dempsey hit on the ensuing possession to give the hosts a 13-12
advantage with 13:11 on the clock. Chase answered with her second
3-pointer of the game and the Judges never trailed again. They were
ahead by as many as 14 points in the first half before Case closed
to within six before junior Kiersten Holgash (Easton, Pa.) scored
at the buzzer to give the Judges a 36-28 lead at the intermission.
Case got within seven a couple of times early in the second half
and were within nine with just under eight minutes to go, but the
lead never got within double figures after that.
Brandeis closes out its regular season next weekend at archrival
New York University Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Judges will look to
avenge a 59-53 loss to the Violets earlier this season and clinch a
fourth-straight 20-win season.
