Chapin's career-best 18 lifts Brandeis women past Emory, 73-59

WALTHAM, Mass. – Rookie Jessica Chapin (Mendon, N.Y.) came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points, leading three players in double figures, as the Brandeis University women's basketball team defeating visiting Emory University, 73-59, in University Athletic Association (UAA) action today.

Brandeis (13-2, 3-2 UAA, No. 16 WBCA, No. 17 d3hoops.com) trailed, 12-11, six minutes into the contest, when the Judges went on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 24-14 lead they would never relinquish. Chapin hit two 3-pointers and had a steal and an assist in the run. The Judges took a 37-23 lead into the locker room, with Chapin scoring 11 points in the first half.

Emory (7-9, 1-4 UAA) came out on fire in the second half. The Eagles hit seven of their first 12 shots over the first 6:30 after intermission, while the Judges missed 11 of their first 13. Sophomore forward Lora Turner (Florence, Ala.) had six points and classmate Erica Kaplan (Commack, N.Y.) had five as EU outscored Brandeis 16-4 to open the stanza.

The Eagles closed to within two, 41-39, on a jumper by junior guard Katie Rizzo (Elk Grove Village, Ill.), but Judge junior Jaime Capra (Old Bridge, N.J.) put the hosts on her back to stifle the rally. Capra scored the game's next five points and assisted a bucket by sophomore forward Amanda Wells (Loudon, N.H.) in a 7-0 Brandeis spurt that pushed the lead back to nine, 50-41. A Kaplan trifecta with 8:25 left got Emory back with five at 52-47, but Wells and Chapin answered with long-range hoops of their own, and the Judges cruised from there.

Chapin's 18 points came on six-of-12 shooting, including four-of-nine from beyond the arc. She also hit both her free throws and had five rebounds while matching her career-best four assists. Capra finished with 15 points, five boards and a game-high five assists that tied her career-high. Sophomore forward Lauren Orlando (Peabody, Mass.) rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Judges with 13 points and game-highs with nine rebounds and three blocks, the latter a career mark. The Judges enjoyed a 45-35 rebounding advantage, including 18-11 on the offensive glass.

Emory also put three players in double figures, paced by Kaplan with 16 points on five-of-eight from the floor with a pair from beyond the arc. She also went four-for-four from the line and led the Eagles with four assists. Turner finished with 14 points on six-of-14 from the floor and tied with Kaplan for team-best with seven rebounds. Rizzo finished with 13 points in 16 minutes on a perfect shooting day, hitting all five of her shots, including a 3-pointer, and both free throws before fouling out.
