No. 7 women's hoops suffers first loss of season at No. 3 Rochester, 69-59

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The No. 7 ranked Brandeis University men's basketball team dropped its University Athletic Association (UAA) opener tonight, falling 69-59 at No. 3 University of Rochester.

Brandeis (9-1, 0-1 UAA) saw its nine-game winning streak come to a halt despite a game-high 14 points from junior Jaime Capra and 13 from senior Caitlin Malcolm. Rookie and Mendon, N.Y, native Jessica Chapin had nine points and five rebounds for the Judges in her homecoming, but no other Brandeis player had more than six points. Malcolm stuffed the stat sheet with team-highs in rebounds (6), steals (5) and blocks (3) while tying three others with three assists.

Rochester (10-0, 2-0 UAA) improved to 3-0 against ranked teams this season behind 12 points each from Jessica Waddell and Julie Marriott, who scored 10 in the second half. Sophomore Alex Porter came off the bench to score 10 points as the Yellowjacket reserves outscored Brandeis, 30-17. Sophomore Helen Baroody led all players with eight rebounds, while senior Emily Bango had a game-high seven assists. UR outrebounded Brandeis by a 39-29 margin, including 14-5 on the offensive glass.

The first half was a tight affair, featuring five ties and four lead changes. Rochester was up by six with 1:08 to go, but Chapin scored the final four points of the stanza to get the Judges within 30-28. Brandies tied the game at 35 just under three minutes in, but UR went on a 24-6 run over the next 12 minutes to go ahead by 18 and the Yellowjackets held on from there.
