Judges claim women's basketball Tip-Off title as Malcom earns MVP honors for the third time

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior forward Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, Conn.) earned Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament MVP honors for the third year in a row with a 24-point, eight-rebound performance as the Judges defeated St. Lawrence University, 68-47, in the championship game today. Earlier in the day , Trinity College defeated Regis by a 67-48 margin in the consolation game.

Brandeis (2-0), ranked No. 15 in the nation by d3hoops.com and No. 16 by the WBCA, shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half to open up a 39-28 lead at the break. The Judges had 15 assists on their 16 first-half field goals. The game was tied at 14-14 with 12:27 on the clock when the Judges went on a decisive 21-6 run. Malcolm and junior guard Jaime Capra (Old Bridge, N.J.) each had 11 points to lead Brandeis at the break, while SLU also had 11 from junior guard Jaime Wolff (Buffalo, N.Y.).

St. Lawrence (1-1) got back within eight points as Wolff opened the second half with a 3-pointer. The Judges responded with seven straight points by Malcolm, four from the line and a trifecta of her own, pushing the lead to 46-33, and the Judges never trailed by less than 13 after that.

Malcolm turned in the tournament's high-scoring performance with seven-of-10 from the floor, including a pair from long distance, and eight-of-nine from the free throw line. Her eight rebounds were also a game-high. Capra hit three times from beyond the arc and finished with 15 points. Junior guard Kiersten Holgash (Easton, Pa.) and rookie guard Jessica Chapin (Mendon, N.Y.) tied for game-high honors with four assists. The Judges made St. Lawrence pay for their 16 fouls by hitting 16-of-18 from the line.

The Saints were paced by Wolff, who finished with 16 points and a pair of assists. Senior forward Andrea Muszynski (Buffalo, N.Y.) added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Both players tied for team-high with two assists. After shooting a decent 44 percent from the floor in the first half (11-25), the Saints went cold in the second, hitting just 19 percent (6-31).

In the consolation game, Trinity (1-1) scored the first 10 points of the contest and never looked back in their 67-48 win over Regis (0-2). The Bantams got a double-double from rookie forward Christine Card (Waterbury, Conn.), who had 15 points and 11 rebounds (four offensive). Card hit seven-of-13 from the floor, and added three blocks. Senior guard Catherine Maher (Newtown, Conn.) and rookie reserve forward Kristen Dwyer (Woburn, Mass.) also reached double figures with 10 points apiece. Maher, rookie Tess Donie (Worcester, Mass.) and senior Sarah Cox (Norwell, Mass.) tied for game-high honors with four assists each. Regis was paced by a tremendous performance by rookie Jessica Page (Quincy, Mass.) who had 19 points and 16 rebounds. Page hit six-of-12 from the floor with a 3-pointer, and went six-of-nine from the line. Sophomore Kimberly Mariotti (Springfield, Mass.) almost matched the double-double with 14 points and nine boards, while sophomore Laura Sears (Billerica, Mass.) had 13 points and three assists.

In addition to Malcolm as the tournament MVP, the All-Tournament team consisted of Capra from Brandeis, Muszynski and Wolff from St. Lawrence, Cox from Trinity and Sears from Regis.
