St. Louis, Mo. (taken from a WashU press release) — The No. 25 Washington University women’s basketball team opened the second half on a 19-3 run en route to a 69-50 win over No. 17 Brandeis University on Friday night at the WU Field House. With the win, Washington U. moved into a first-place tie in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings.

Washington U., which hit its first nine shots of the second half, shot 51.1 percent from the field in the victory. The Bears also limited Brandeis, which missed its first 13 shots from the field in the second frame, to 25.5 percent shooting from the field.

Brandeis junior Jamie Capra (Old Bridge, N.J.) scored seven points in the first five minutes as the visitors hit five of their first six shots to build an early 11-4 advantage. The Judges (13-3, 3-3 UAA) continued to lead midway through the first half, and took a 22-15 lead after Lauren Orlando connected on two free-throws.

Trailing 27-21, the Bears ended the half by scoring the final seven points and holding the Judges scoreless in the final 4:43. Senior Rebecca Parker (Prairie Village, Kan.) had four points during the run, and sophomore Jill Brandt (St. Louis, Mo.) added two free-throws with 35 seconds remaining to make it 28-27 at half.

The Bears shot 42.3 percent from the field in the opening half. Brandt had nine points while senior Sarah Schell (Lexington, Ky.) and Parker added six points each.

Sophomore Jaimie McFarlin (Monroe, N.Y.) scored six points in an 8-0 run early in the second half as the Bears jumped ahead 38-30. Sophomore Halsey Ward (Little Rock, Ark.) came off the bench to hit two 3-pointers, and senior Jenny Southworth (Springfield, Ill.) drained a three to push the lead to 47-31 with less than 13 minutes to play.

The Judges connected on their first field goal of the second period with 7:45 left on the clock when senior Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, Conn.) scored on a lay-up. Brandeis managed just three made field goals in the second half, when it shot 23.8 percent.

McFarlin notched her eighth career double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Parker had her 14th career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Bears outrebounded the Judges 49-28. Capra led the Judges with 13 points and five rebounds.
