WALTHAM, Mass. – The Washington University women's basketball team outscored host Brandeis 14-3 over the final 3:26 of the contest today as the 11th-ranked Bears defeated the No. 19 Judges, 51-45, in University Athletic Association (UAA) play today.

Washington (15-5, 7-2) was paced by sophomore Jaimie McFarlin (Monroe, N.Y.), who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She hit six-of-10 from the floor, including what proved to be the game-winning bucket with 1:10 left in the contest. Senior Sarah Schell (Lexington, Ky.) had 14 points that included five free throws down the stretch to ice the contest. Senior Rebecca Parker (Prairie Village, Kans.) added eight points and nine rebounds.

Brandeis (15-4, 5-4 UAA) got 16 points and nine rebounds from junior Jaime Capra (Old Bridge, N.J.), but no other Judge reached double figures. Sophomore Lauren Orlando (Peabody, Mass.) added eight points, while senior Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, Conn.) had six points, nine boards and had game-high honors with four assists and five steals. The Judges shot just 27 percent for the game and have been held to their two lowest scoring outputs of the season against WashU.

The game featured nine ties and seven lead changes. A sluggish first-half saw the Bears leading by eight, 19-11, with 5:36 to go before the break before an 8-2 run trimmed the lead to 21-17. Both teams shot below 34 percent for the half, with McFarlin leading all players with eight points and Capra totaling seven.

In the second stanza, Schell put the visitors ahead, 25-19, on a jumper three minutes in. Brandeis answered with eight unanswered points over the next four minutes, taking a 27-25 lead on a driving lay-up by rookie guard Jessica Chapin (Mendon, N.Y.). It was the Judges' first lead since the score was 9-8. Neither team was able to pull away, and the game was tied at 37-37 with 5:09 left.

The Judges went back ahead by five points, with sophomore Cassidy Dadaos (Healdsburg, Calif.) converting a free-throw, a lay-up and line-drive jumper that put the hosts ahead, 42-37, with 3:26 on the clock. WashU answered with a huge 3-pointer from the elbow by sophomore Halsey Ward (Little Rock, Ark.) and one-of-two from the line by McFarlin to get back within one, 42-41, with 2:29 left.

Capra pushed the Brandeis lead back to four with another trifecta, just the team's second of the game, but Ward's second bomb just 18 seconds later negated the momentum. Ward then stole the ball to give WashU possession, and an offensive rebound led to a McFarlin lay-up that proved to be the game-winner. After Capra missed a shot on the next Brandeis possession, Schell missed the back end of a one-and-one, but McFarlin tapped the rebound away, and WashU was able to pull away from the line.
