WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's
basketball team shot a season-high 58 percent from the floor
(34-59) as the Judges rolled over visiting Husson College, 86-46,
in the second semester opener for both teams. This was the
first-ever meeting between the Judges and Eagles.
Brandeis (8-2) raced out to a 46-25 lead at halftime as they
connected on 18-of-29 shots from the field (62 percent), including
three-of-six from beyond the arc. The Judges also hit all seven
free throws in the first half. Husson (3-5) hit just 30 percent in
the first (7-23), and stayed as close as they did by hitting 10 of
their 12 free throws.
For the game, the hosts were paced by 14 points each from sophomore
guard Jessica Chapin (Mendon, N.Y.) and junior forward Lauren
Orlando (Peabody, Mass.). Chapin hit five-of-eight from the field
with one of the team's three 3-pointers, and was three-of-four from
the line. She also matched her career high with six steals. Orlando
connected on five-of-seven from the floor and all four free throws.
Junior forward Amanda Wells (Loudon, N.H.) came off the bench to
score 10 points, one short of her season high. Junior forward
Cassidy Dadaos (Healdsburg, Calif.) led the Judges with six
rebounds, while senior guard Kiersten Holgash (Easton, Pa.) had a
game-high four assists. In all, Brandeis converted 32 Husson
turnovers into 40 points, while allowing just 17 points off 18
turnovers of their own.
Husson was paced by junior forward Shelby Bradford (Lee, Maine),
who led the Eagles with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
She hit three-of-11 from the field, but went eight-for-nine from
the line. Four of her seven rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Sophomore forward Lindsay Barnes (Owls Head, Maine) came off the
bench to tally seven points, while junior guard Laura Archer
(Ellsworth, Maine) had six points and matched Pickering with three
steals.
Brandeis is next in action on Wednesday, when they take on Simmons
College at home at 7 p.m. in their final regular-season
non-conference contest. Husson plays host to the University of
Southern Maine on Tuesday at 5:30 in the first game of a
non-conference double-header.
