Cold shooting dooms Brandeis women at No. 11 Rochester, 53-37

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (taken from a U of R press release) – Visiting Brandeis University couldn't get its shooting untracked and the University of Rochester won, 53-37, at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday night.

The Yellowjackets improved to 18-3 overall, 7-3 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester is ranked No. 11 by D3hoops.com and No. 13 by the WBCA. Brandeis is 8-13 overall, 1-9 UAA.

Senior Morgan Kendrew (Cotuit, Mass./Barnstable) scored eight points to lead Brandeis, only the second time in 10 UAA games she has been held below 10 points. Sophomore Nicolina Vitale (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley)  had seven points off the bench, as did senior Kelly Ethier (Springfield, Mass./Minnechaug Regional). The Judges hit 13-of-59 from the floor (22%). They were 0-for-13 from  beyond the arc as they were held to their second lowest scoring total of the season.

Rochester's Laney Ming was the only player for either team to reach double figures. She had 11 points. Loren Wagner had nine points and 11 rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench. Jodie Luther scored eight points.

Rochester sank 21 of 61 from the floor (34%) and 4 of 16 outside the arc (25%). The Yellowjackets hit 42% in the first half (13-31) as they opened a 31-19 lead. Rochester went on a 17-4 spree midway through the first half to build a 27-10 lead with 6:06 left. Ming had five points in the run and Luther scored four.

Brandeis did win the battle of the boards, 47-46, marking the second time this season Brandeis topped UR on the glass. The Judges grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and turned those in 11 second-chance points. Rochester scored 14 points off 15 Brandeis turnovers.

The Judges return to action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they take on Emory in Atlanta.
