WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team fell behind early against eighth-ranked NYU and the Judges were unable to rally, falling to the Violets, 68-49. Brandeis falls to 8-4 overall, 0-1 in the University Athletic Association, while NYU improves to 11-0, 1-0 UAA.

After Brandeis senior Hannah Cain (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester) scored the first bucket of the game, NYU scored 10 in a row and never trailed again. The visitors extended their lead to 17-4 before the Judges battled back with an 8-0 run, closing within 17-12 on a Tori Dobson (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) jumper. The Judges were still within six points with 4:21 left in the first before NYU scored the final four points of the stanza to take a 33-23 lead into the break. The Violets' Kaitlyn Read (University Park, Texas/Highland Park) scored 14 points in the first half to pace NYU, while Dobson had six.

After NYU scored the first four of the second, Brandeis battled back again, with another eight points in a row. The run could have been even stronger, but the Judges missed three of six free throws. A Paris Hodges (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) hit a jumper with 16:20 left and again at the 15:52 mark, to make it a 39-33 deficit. The Violets answered with the next nine points of the game over a three-minute span, pushing the lead to 48-33 on two Megan Dawe (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) free throws, and the lead never went below double digits again.

Brandeis was paced by Dobson, who matched her career-high with 10 points, hitting 4-of-5 from the floor and both free throws. Hodges had eight points and a team-high three assists, while Cain had seven points, team-high six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

NYU put three players in double figures, led by Read, who stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals. Dawe added 16 points, while sophomore Emily Rowe (Vancouver, Wash./Union) turned in a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass. The Violets owned a 47-36 rebounding edge, including 21-14 on the offensive boards.

Brandeis returns to UAA play next Friday night at Carnegie Mellon University at 6 p.m., while NYU hosts Hunter College on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
