Hannah Cain named 2nd team All-UAA, three earn honorable mention

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University women's basketball senior Hannah Cain of Gloucester, Mass., has been named a second-team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection for 2014-15. Sophomores Paris Hodges of Southampton, N.Y., and Maria Jackson of Rochester, N.Y., and junior Niki Laskaris of Swampscott, Mass., earned All-UAA honorable mentions.

      Cain was a second-team All-Association guard as a sophomore before missing her junior campaign to injury. She came back strong this year to lead the Judges in scoring (9.6 ppg), assists (2.3 apg) and steals (1.8 spg), while also finishing third in rebounding (4.9 rpg). In UAA games, Cain performed even better, averaging 9.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. For the season, she led Brandeis in scoring five times, rebounding three times and assists 13 times. Cain had 14 games scoring in double figures and posted one double-double, with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the second game of the season against Salve Regina on Nov. 16 as she was named to the Brandeis Invitational All-Tournament team. Cain also scored a career-high 18 points in a 60-52 win at the University of Rochester on Feb. 8. Cain started 24 of the team's 25 games this season and 74 of 75 in the three seasons in which she was healthy.

      Hodges, who was an All-UAA honorable mention guard for the second year in a row, averaged 8.2 points per game overall, fourth-best on the team, but was second in UAA contests at 9.4 ppg. She averaged 3.9 rebounds and was second on the team with 1.4 assists per game. Hodges's numbers were similar to her conference averages, as she missed the first eight non-conference games of the season due to injury, playing in 17 total. She bounced back to lead the team in scoring twice in conference play, in rebounding three times and in assists four times. Hodges scored in double figures five times this season, twice setting a career-high with 15 points, in the Judges' 60-52 win at Rochester and in an 86-69 loss at UAA Co-Champions Chicago on Feb. 20.

      Jackson is a first-time UAA honoree at forward despite missing the first five games of conference season due to injury. She finished with 17 games played and scored 8.3 points per game, tied for second, and tied for the team lead with 6.1 rebounds per game. She also tied for second on the squad with 27 steals and 12 blocked shots. In conference play, Jackson averaged 6.1 points and a team-best 6.1 boards per game. Jackson led the Judges in scoring twice, including a career-high 19 points in the season-opener against Mount Ida. She topped the team in rebounding six times and registered one double-double with 13 points and 10 boards in a 66-54 win over Emmanuel on Nov. 25.

Laskaris is also a first-team All-UAA honorable mention at guard. She played in all 25 games and started 24 of them. She was second on the team in scoring overall at 8.3 points per game while finishing second with 31 3-pointers. She also averaged 3.2 rebounds and tied with Hodges for second on the team with 1.4 assists per contest. Laskaris averaged 6.2 points and 2.6 boards per game in the UAA. She notched double digits in scoring 11 times, leading the Judges on five occasions. She also had a team-best in assists three times and rebounding once. Her top performance this season was 19 points against Johnson and Wales in a 73-56 on Dec. 6. She also contributing 17 points in a 62-61 UAA loss to Rochester on Feb. 1.

The Brandeis women's basketball team finished the regular season with a 13-12 record under 28th-year head coach Carol Simon, 5-9 and fifth place in the UAA. The Judges are a balanced squad, with 11 players averaging at least 10 minutes per game but none more than 25 minutes and eight players scoring between 6.0 and 9.6 points per game. Brandeis also finished third in the UAA in scoring defense at 59.7 points allowed per game. The Judges earned the sixth seed in the ECAC Division III New England tournament and will face third-seed Roger Williams tonight at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Cain is a 2011 graduate of Gloucester High School.

Hodges is a 2013 graduate of Southampton High School.

Laskaris is a 2012 graduate of Swampscott High School.
