ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team picked up a vital road win in the University Athletic Association (UAA) tonight, as the Judges defeated Washington University, 92-84. With the win, the Judges improve to 9-3 overall, 1-1 in the UAA, while the Bears fall to 9-4, 0-2 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Trailing 19-17 after one quarter, the Judges used a strong second period to secure the victory.
• Brandeis opened the second with a 13-4 run over the first 5:41 and went on to outscore WashU, 26-11, for the stanza.
• The run was sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from rookie Camila Casanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos) and sophomore Katie Goncalo (Fall River, Mass./Tabor Academy) that gave Brandeis the lead for good.            
• Goncalo went on to score 11 points in the second, as many as the entire WashU team.
• The Judges ended up shooting 62.5% (10-for-16) from the field in the period, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, they held the Bears to 35.7% (5-for-14) and 0-for-4 from downtown.
• After sending WashU to the line 10 times in the first quarter, where they scored nine of their 19 points, the Bears did not make it to the foul line in the second.
• Leading 43-30 at halftime, Brandeis rookie Jillian Petrie (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) opened the second half with a layup to make it a 15-point lead.
• WashU scored the game's next nine points, cutting their deficit to 45-39 on a Madeline Homoly lay-in with 6:38 to go in the period.
• Brandeis kept the home team without a field goal over the next six minutes as they eventually established their largest lead of the game, 63-46, on a Sarah Jaromin (E. Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) trifecta with 1:13 to go in the period.
• The Judges would keep Washington at bay in the fourth quarter as they hit 22-of-33 free throws, including 11-of-14 from Casanueva.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• The Judges were led in scoring by Casanueva, who scored a career-high 17 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter at the free throw line.
• Goncalo and rookie Katherine Puda (Whitinsville, Mass./Worcester Academy) each had 13 points, with Goncalo's big second period being especially key. Puda scored seven in the first period and six in the third. Both players connected on three 3-pointers.
• Jaromin and senior Noel Hodges (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) each finished with nine points, while sophomore Hannah Nicholson (Sunderland, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) and Petrie each scored eight.  
• Senior Eva Hart (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) had a terrific all-around game with six points, six rebounds and career-highs of six steals and five assists.
• Nicholson pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds as the Judges tied the Bears, 44-44, on the glass.
• Casanueva matched Hart with five assists.
• The Judges outshot WashU, 42.9% (27-63) to 36.7% (22-60) from the field and 47.4% (9-19) to 20.0% (5-20) from 3-point range.
• Brandeis also won the turnover battle, 21-16, converting those miscues into 25 points.
• The Judges' bench outscored WashU's 48-15, with Casanueva surpassing the Bear reserves on her own.

HISTORIC WIN FOR JUDGES

• The win was Brandeis first over Washington University since January 28, 2008.
• It was just the second road win for Brandeis in the series, with the only other coming on February 6, 2005.
• The 92 points scored by the Judges mark the program's most-ever scored against a Washington U. team by 20 points. Only twice in the past had Brandeis scored 70 against the Bears.

FOR WASHINGTON

• Homoly led all players with 25 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
• Three other starters also reached double digits in scoring: Natalie Orr with 16 points, Kristina Schmelter with 14 and Rachael Sondag with 13.
• Shelby Mann led the Bears with five assists.

AT THE LINE

• The game featured 67 fouls, the second-most ever in a Division III women's basketball game.
• WashU committed 36 fouls, Brandeis had 31.

• Brandeis heads to 25^th-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday for a 2 p.m. EST start (1 CST) for another UAA contest.
