Casanueva double-double leads Brandeis women past CMU, 78-61

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Sophomore guard Camila Casanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos) notched her first career double-double tonight with 27 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Brandeis University women's basketball team a 78-61 University Athletic Association (UAA) victory over host Carnegie Mellon University in Skibo Gymnasium. The Judges improve to 6-6 overall, 2-0 in the UAA, while the Tartans fall to 9-4, 0-2 UAA.


  • The Judges trailed for only 15 seconds early in this one. Down 5-4 just over two minutes in, Brandeis scored the game's next eight points, including a pair of Casanueva trifectas.
  • Brandeis outshot CMU, 50 percent (7-14) to 17 percent (3-18), in bulding a 19-10 lead at the end of one period.
  • The second period was a defensive struggle, with the Judges increasing their lead by one with an 11-10 advantage to take a 30-20 lead into the half. Casanueva led Brandeis with nine points in the first half, while junior forward Hannah Nicholson (Sunderland, Vt./Burr and Burton Acad.) had seven points and six rebounds.
  • The Judges extended their lead by two more points in the third, with rookie Maya Burris (San Francisco, Calif./Loomis Chaffee) leading the way with seven points in the stanza, to take a 51-39 lead into the final 10 minutes.
  • Casanueva helped the Judges put the game away in the fourth, scoring 14 points – including 9-of-10 from the line – as Brandeis led by as many as 23 points before their final 17-point margin of victory.


  • Casanueva led all players with 27 points and 10 rebounds, registering her first collegiate double-double in the process.
  • She hit 7-of-12 from the field, 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line.
  • The 10 rebounds marked a career-high for Casanueva, who also led the team with four assists.
  • Nicholson also scored in double digits for the Judges with 13 points, hitting 6-of-7 from the field and her only free throw. She also contributed eight rebounds and three assists.
  • Five other Brandeis players scored between seven and nine points, while three had five or six rebounds.
  • Leah Weslock led Carnegie Mellon in scoring with 17 points and six rebounds, while Makayla Filiere had 12 points.
  • Jenn Mayberger of the Tartans led all players with eight assists.
  • The Judges outshot CMU, 46.2 percent (24-52) to 29.9 percent (23-77) for the game. They held the Tartans to just 8-of-35 from 3-point range (22.9%).
  • Brandeis also held a 26-7 scoring advantage from the free-throw line and outrebounded the hosts, 49-36.
  • The win was the Judges' third in a row in the series against Carnegie Mellon.


  • The Judges travel to Cleveland on Sunday to take on Case Western Reserve at 2 p.m. for the second game of their UAA road trip.
  • Carnegie Mellon will host New York University at the same time.
  • CWRU defeated NYU, 72-62, tonight. The Spartans and Judges are two of three remaining teams who are 2-0 in the UAA.
